The Art of Making Luv to the Beat with Watch The Duck

This weekend, while attending the Budwesier Made In America festival, I had the chance to catch a performance by a group I wasn’t very familiar with. Watch The Duck was performing on the Freedom Stage as I was passing by and two things caught my attention. The guitarist, Oscar White, was wearing a huge duck head, which really quaked me up (yeah, I went there) and the music was pretty freakin’ awesome!

Since I didn’t know much about these guys, I decided to do a little research to find out more. These guys were DJs, producers, and musicians originally from Montgomery, Alabama but moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2010. In 2012 the group dominated the freshman music poll on mtvU and their song “Poppin’ Off” was added to their regular rotation. And their ’The Trojan Horse’ EP which was was released in November 2015 was executive produced by Pharrell Williams, T.I., Steve Aoki and Tricky Stewart. The album even had several guest artists joining them, including Pharrell Williams, SchoolBoy Q, AfroJack, and T.I.

I stuck around after their performance and had a chance to ask the guys in Watch The Duck a few questions starting off with how they came up with such an unusual name. Turns out that the name of the group comes from a phrase that they use to describe their work. Eddie Smith (DJ and percussions) has been quoted as saying, “Everybody sees the duck traveling smoothly on top of the water but nobody sees it kicking hard as hell under it, struggling to stay afloat.”

Seems like I wasn’t the only one catching up with the guys to get some questions answered. When I asked if they got to see other performances during the Budweiser Made In America festival they said that they spent a lot of time doing interviews but they did catch a piece of “homie” Travis Scott’s show. Jesse Rankins (lead vocals) added “He’s the right amount of crazy in a good way!”

Some of Watch The Duck’s highlights from the festival included seeing people run to the stage as we started performing. Watching people just get lost in the music and dance like no one is watching them is the greatest thing ever. Oscar White even said “the chocolate chip cookies in catering were fire!”

So what’s next from Watch The Duck and what can fans expect? The Duck is an amazing visual artist! He’s doing an art gallery show in LA which they will film called “the Art of Making Luv to the Beat”. Also Watch The Duck will have a new single and video coming very soon for the new record which will be called “Where You Are”.
