July 13, 2018 | Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island, Chicago, IL –

Thirty years in and still going strong, Canadian alt-pop stalwarts Barenaked Ladies brought their Last Summer on Earth tour to Huntingon Bank Pavilion on Chicago’s Northerly Island.  It was a sweltering Friday the 13th on Lake Michigan but anybody worried about the heat index ended up with a bit of good luck as a nice cool breeze picked up right before show time.

Between album cuts, BNL’s lead singer and songwriter Ed Robertson delighted the crowd with ad-libbed songs and raps, as he has done at just about every BNL performance since 1988. With a large part of the set being devoted to newer material from their latest album, Fake Nudes, and other post-Steven Page projects (Page, with Robertson, co-founded the band but left in an acrimonious split in early 2009). The crowd certainly enjoyed the new material a great deal but the excitement level really picked up when the band dusted off older tunes such as “Pinch Me,” “Enid,” and  “The Old Apartment.”

With the loss of Page, the band has adjusted to fill the gaps with other members taking on more duties and bassist Jim Creeggan and guitarist/keyboardist Kevin Hearn showed they were up to the task by fronting a few songs and showing off their best rock moves on each side of the stage to keep the crowd going.

The main set ended with Tyler Stewart coming out from behind his drum set to deliver his unique takes on cover version of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and the Violent Femmes’ “Blister in the Sun.” The night ended with a beautiful rendition of “Light up my Room” from the band’s most commercially successful album Stunt.

KT Tunstall and Better Than Ezra opened the show and each had a large number of fans in the audience singing along. Tunstall also joined BNL on stage to assist on their classic hit “Brian Wilson” and Ezra’s leader Kevin Griffin also joined BNL for “Lookin’ Up,” a song he helped co-write for the band’s latest release.
