March 29, 2018 | San Francisco, CA – On a warm, nearly full moonlit night in San Francisco, CA Durand Jones & The Indications stopped in at The Independent for a few hours. The soldout venue was packed full of young music fans along with some veterans, too. It was stimulating to witness this rebirth of soul into the music scene, and although the city is quite eclectic, it seemed that on this night the crowd was collectively here for one reason only.
Now, just who are Durand Jones & The Indications? There is little written or known about this group as they are just gaining traction. Durand himself is from a small town in Louisiana. In 2012 he enrolled in Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University as an alto saxophone undergrad, but soon found himself singing in front of college students, a few who turned into The Indications. They brought together their love of soul music, a 4-track recorder, and some beer and spent countless hours recording what turned out to be their debut album. They teamed up with Terry Cole of Colemine Records in Ohio to officially cut and press their album. Colemine prides itself on making and promoting “soul music the way we think it should be made”. Their album out now was just featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered”, so they are gaining some notice!
At around 9:45pm, and fashionably late, the boys emerged out of a door from the side of the stage. The greeted the anxious crowd after receiving an exhuberant welcome. They then laid down a smokin’ set of soulful music for all in attendance, just as they had a few nights before at the famed Troubadour Club in West Hollywood, CA. Drawing from their self-titled debut album and a plethora of titles from their heroes, they played for nearly 1-1/2 hours. Taking a 5 minute break, the band emerged once again to play an encore of 3 more songs. I was pleasantly surprised to hear every song sung by the fans in the club that night. This seems to convince me that soul is in good hands, not only with those carrying that torch, but those that are recieving its light.
Catch these guys as they make their way up the West Coast and across the US. Plenty of dates and places to catch them through April, then they are off to Europe and UK for the first half of May and July. They return to California in late May for BottleRock Napa Valley Festival. Perhaps we’ll catch up with them then.
